What is DLT Registration? Demystifying TRAI Regulations

Everything you need to know about Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) for sending SMS in India, and how to navigate it as a developer.

What is DLT?

DLT stands for Distributed Ledger Technology. In the context of Indian telecommunications, it refers to a blockchain-based registration system mandated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The regulation requires all businesses sending promotional or transactional SMS (including OTPs) to register themselves, their sender IDs, and their message templates on a centralized DLT platform maintained by telecom operators (Jio, Airtel, Vi, etc.).

Why did TRAI mandate DLT?

The primary goal is spam prevention and consumer protection. By enforcing a strict KYC and template registration process, TRAI aims to eliminate fraudulent messages and ensure that consumers only receive communications from verified entities.

The Three Stages of DLT Registration

1. Principal Entity Registration

Your company must register as an entity by submitting business incorporation documents, PAN, and KYC details. This process typically takes 3-5 days and costs ₹5,900.

2. Header (Sender ID) Registration

After entity approval, you must claim a 6-character alphabetic header for transactional messages (e.g., FSTOTP). Takes 1-2 days.

3. Content Template Registration

Every unique message format must be approved. For example: "Your OTP is {#var#}. Do not share this with anyone." Any SMS sent that doesn't exactly match an approved template is blocked by operators.

The FlashAuth Advantage

Navigating the DLT process can delay product launches by weeks. FlashAuth handles the complexity of DLT compliance for developers. Our pre-approved transactional routes and optimized templates mean you can start verifying users immediately without dealing with telecom portals, KYC uploads, or template rejections.
